PDEQ Opens Public Comment Period

 

PDEQ’s 90-Day Public Comment Period
for Rosemont Copper’s Proposed Air Quality Permit
Pima County, Ariz. (August 24, 2011) - The 90-day public comment period for the Pima County Department of Environmental Quality’s Rosemont Copper Company’s Proposed Air Quality Permit for a copper mining project in Sonoita officially begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011 and ends Monday, Nov. 28, 2011 at 5 p.m. The project is sited at 12700 E. Greaterville Road in Sonoita, Ariz.

The proposed permit addresses the potential emissions of several air pollutants, including particulate matter, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, and hazardous air pollutants.

Written comments can be submitted by anyone throughout the comment period. Oral comments can be made at a formal public hearing, which has not yet been scheduled.

Each written comment must include the name and mailing address of the writer, and be signed by the individual, his agent or his attorney. It should clearly explain the reasons why the permit should or should not be issued.  Grounds for public comment are limited to whether the proposed permit meets the criteria for issuance prescribed in Arizona Revised Statutes, Sections 49-480 and 49-481, and Title 17 of the Pima County Code.  Only individuals who submit written comments may appeal a permit decision.

Copies of the permit application, the proposed permit, and relevant background material may be obtained from PDEQ’s website at http://www.deq.pima.gov/permits/RosemontCopper.htm.
